Flower in the River - the Podcast

Hello everyone! It’s been a while and I thought I’d pop in and say HI!

I hope you’re all having a good 2023 so far. If it ever stops being winter in Minnesota, I’m sure we will enjoy it more as well.

I'm guessing a few of you know that my Mom died soon after I released my book in early 2022. Since the book was about her maternal line and her lost history, I was racing against the clock to get it to her, Some of her last words to me were, "Geez, I hope I don't croak before I get to see that book!" (Our somewhat zany family has often resorted to gallows humor when faced with difficult situations. Works for us. Mostly!)

Well, I rushed the book through the publishing process, and Mom got her copy two weeks before she died. I like the British phrase "knackered" a lot since that best describes most of 2022 and early 2023 for me.

That said, I wasn't entirely out of circulation in 2022. My dear publicist stepped in and booked me on various radio shows and podcasts (including a show I'd listened to for years, Coast to Coast AM!) Check out the Media page on my website to listen.

So, it's 2023, and here's what's new with Flower in the River.

  •  Thanks and more thanks to those who bought my book. I couldn't think of much of a marketing slogan, so I just wrote, "Please buy my book. I owe people money." But in spite of that, it continues to sell and, more importantly, to touch people's lives. I'm gathering some of the texts and emails people have sent to me. One of the most touching? A friend gave the book to her dad as he was dying, giving him comfort and hope. I'm beyond grateful if my family's great tragedy and resilience story can do that for someone.

  •  I started a podcast and gave it the imaginative title of Flower in the River PodcastWhile doing the podcast/radio circuit, I got inspired by people's questions and insights about the book--doing my own pod just made sense. While it's built around the book, I am also adding bits of pieces I've learned (or stepped into) as an independent author. I also share genealogy tips and tricks!

  • Yes, there still is an audiobook in the works, and I'll let you know when that's released.

  •  There are a few other exciting possibilities around some other media work, and I'll share those with you when they become actualities!

Thanks again for your support and please feel free to reach out and say HI!

I've been a writer, actor, photographer, and musician and have worked as a freelance journalist for magazines and papers since I was in my late teens.

My favorite writing job was working for an award-winning community newspaper in Saint Paul, the Park Bugle.

I’ve also taught others how to write for community newspapers at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, MN. And, during the last few years, I became a family historian.
