Use Case: Updating Mary Helen Egan’s Profile on Find a Grave

Mary Helen Egan is part of the Eastland Disaster Victims Virtual Cemetery Created by User Bert! (Thank you, Bert!)

Open the Eastland Disaster Victims virtual cemetery on Find a Gave to get started.

Check out the Find a Grave WIKI on FamilySearch.org.

I'm adding Mary's obituary to her Find A Grave profile, as it offers detailed insights into her life, including her educational background and family connections. It also provides the names of many individuals who accompanied her on the Eastland."

I used photo editing software to adjust the contrast.

Mary’s profile already had a lot of useful information - including her photo and a photo of her headstone at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Evanston, IL.

I wanted to add the obituary to her profile and also locate her parents’ graves to begin connecting the family.

Steps for adding the obituary.

Making additional edits to Mary’s profile.

I could only locate Mary’s father, Redmond Egan, on Find A Grave, but was unable to locate her mother. There’s always more work to be done in genealogy :)

I submitted the changes to Find A Grave, making sure to cite the sources! It didn’t take long for them to be accepted and now Mary’s Profile has. more details.

I've been a writer, actor, photographer, and musician and have worked as a freelance journalist for magazines and papers since I was in my late teens.

My favorite writing job was working for an award-winning community newspaper in Saint Paul, the Park Bugle.

I’ve also taught others how to write for community newspapers at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, MN. And, during the last few years, I became a family historian.
